Winter Barn Quilts Soup Bowl Cozy

Every time I reheat something in the microwave and nearly burn my fingers and/or drop my hot bowl, I wish I had a soup bowl cozy. So I decided it was finally time to do myself a favor and whip up a few.

I loved the cozy, wintry look of the new Winter Barn Quilts collection by Tara Reed for Riley Blake Designs, and the small scale prints were the perfect choice for my new soup bowl cozies!

I paired the Blue, Dark Blue, and Parchment Quilt Blocks fabrics with the Blue, Navy, and Silver Compass fabrics. Those tiny quilt block prints are adorable!

I used the free tutorial found at Sew 4 Home (link below).

The tutorial comes with this free printable template, which makes this project so quick and easy to make. I did make one slight change. The directions have you printing up two templates and laying them out on your fabric. This way you are able to fussy cut the fabric design however you like. I didn’t need to do any fussy cutting, so I put the center edge (which the arrows are pointing to) directly on the folded edge of my fabric and cut along all of the other edges.

This way I didn’t need to print up two templates, saving a bit of time.

This pattern has you using two pieces of batting - one is stitched to the outside piece, and one is stitched to the lining piece. I was making three soup bowl cozies, so I ended up this lovely stack of fabric and batting all ready to go! This project is a great way to use up extra scraps of batting and fabric!

I made one other slight change - I added two rows of top stitching instead of just one. I love a nice double row of top stitching. I think it gives a project a nice, finished look. Another option you could try is to round off the corners. This would be a super simple change - just use a small bowl or lid and trace onto the template where the square corners are. Easy!

And there you have it! Quick and easy bowl cozies! These would make a fabulous gift, because let’s be honest, our burnt fingertips are telling us we all need a bowl cozy in our life!
