Reversible Checkerboard Bucket Hat

I have a second project to share with you today featuring the I’d Rather Be Playing Chess collection by Tara Reed. This fun little Bucket Hat is a quick and easy make — perfect for homemade gift giving!

If you missed my first project, a Drawstring Bag with FREE tutorial, featuring this chess-themed fabric, you can check it out HERE.

For the Bucket Hat, I decided to use the red and black Checkerboard for the outer fabric paired with the black stripe for the lining.

The pattern I used is the Sorrento Bucket Hat by Elbe Textiles found HERE. I found this pattern easy to follow, however, be aware the measurements are all in centimeters, so if you are unsure about using the metric system, you can find many similar bucket hat patterns by doing a quick search on Etsy. I made the large size because I wanted to gift this to my husband, so it is definitely a bit big on my teenage daughter. For her or myself, I would make a medium.

Because I used cotton for this hat, I opted to add a stabilizer (Pellon SF101) to all of the outer fabric pieces. In addition, I sandwiched a layer of quilt batting in the brim for extra structure, and because the quilter in me really wanted to quilt some rows on the brim.

The addition of the batting doesn’t make it stiff — it feels just right. You can fold it up to get it out of your face, or if you want the look of the exposed lining, or wear the brim flat to shield the sun.

The hat is easily reversible — just pop it inside out and it’s like having two hats in one! The black, red, and grey stripe is just as cool as the checkerboard fabric. I love that it can be switched up to match your mood or your outfit. So fun!

I seriously LOVE how the checkerboard fabric looks on this hat! As I was planning, I thought it seemed a little risky for a fabric choice, but it looks awesome! It has a bit of a skater look that teens would like, but gift this to a chess player and they will love you forever!
