FREE Tutorial! - How to Make a Child Size Cross Back Apron

Are you starting to think of handmade project ideas for your holiday gift list? It’s another day of creativity at Bayhill Studio, and today I have a fun and FAST tutorial for you! This child size cross back apron can seriously be whipped up in 30 minutes, so you can make one for each little tike on your list.

The apron fits (approximately) kids ages 4-8ur awesome model here is age 5-6 and the apron is very roomy, so he could wear it for another year or two.

It features a simple cross back, perfect for small children who don’t feel comfortable with tying a bow. The front pocket is divided into two sections, although you could easily create more sections if you like.

I would say this is a beginner-friendly sewing project.

To make this apron, I opted to use this fabulous cheater print from the Vintage Caterpillar® collection. I love cheater prints, and this is no exception! This print features dump trucks and other construction vehicles, along with text and the Caterpillar logo.

To make this apron, you will need:

  • 3/4 yard fabric

Yep, that’s it!

Cut out the fabric using the measurements above. **The seam allowances are included in these measurements, so you don’t have to worry about adding those. The first thing I like to do is sketch out my apron. Starting from the fold line, measure 10.5” up and draw a line with chalk (or erasable fabric marker).

Next, measure 15” from the line you just drew and draw another line measuring 9.5”. This line is the bottom of the apron.

From the bottom of the apron, measure 21.5” along the fold. From the 21.5” mark, draw a 4.5” line. This is the top of the apron.

Now, draw a curved line from the top of the apron to the tip of your 10.5” line.

Draw the final line from the tip of the 10.5” line to the tip of the 9.5” line.

This is our main apron piece.

Next, cut out the pocket and TWO apron ties using the measurements above.

After you have cut out your pieces, you are ready to sew! I created a YouTube video where I demonstrate the construction of this apron, so be sure to follow along with me!

I had so much fun making this little apron. I can’t stress how very easy it is to make. You can customize each apron you make with ribbon, trim, patches, embroidery, and more!
